A record crypto theft, and a bad day for gold

Binance Hacked 2026: What Happened, and What It Did to Gold

About $6.3 billion gone, withdrawals frozen, then reopened in phases. The same week gold fell 3.3% in one day alongside Bitcoin and stocks. Here is the timeline, and why a safe haven did not act like one.

If you searched Binance hacked 2026, you probably want two things: a clear account of what happened, and an honest answer to whether it matters to you. On Thursday 29 October 2026, Binance, the biggest crypto exchange in the world, said it had suffered a security breach. The reported loss was about $6.3 billion, the largest crypto theft on record. Within a day withdrawals were frozen, Bitcoin had dropped, and gold, the asset many people still call a safe haven, fell 3.3% in a single session. I run a gold business, not a crypto one, so here is the timeline, kept to what has been reported, and then what that week did to gold.

Binance hacked 2026: the timeline, day by day

Thursday 29 October: the disclosure

Binance disclosed the breach on Thursday and halted withdrawals early on Friday 30 October, Asia time. Deposits were never switched off: you could still send money in, you just could not take it out. According to reporting carried by Yahoo Finance, the loss was put at about $6.3 billion and described as a record.

Who was behind it

The FBI attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a group linked to North Korea. It is the same group previously tied to the $1.5 billion theft from the exchange Bybit in 2025. Investigators were reported to be looking at an engineer's laptop that may have been compromised. Binance said it had found no evidence that its private keys were exposed.

Sunday 1 November: a phased reopening

Withdrawals came back in stages on Sunday 1 November, with the first window running from 06:00 to 09:00 UTC. As Business Today listed them, the first coins to reopen were the large ones: Bitcoin, Ether, BNB, TRX, SOL, XRP, DOGE, TON and AVAX, plus the stablecoins USDT and USDC. Other tokens were described as "still undergoing repeated security audits", with no timeline given.

Who pays for it

Binance said it would absorb the loss itself rather than pass it on to customers, and that about 95% of the stolen assets had been replenished by 1 November. The remaining 5% was mostly tokens outside the top ten. The exchange also said withdrawal volumes were now declining and stabilising.

One number deserves a second look. Binance has an emergency fund for users called SAFU, set up in 2018, which has typically been kept near $1 billion. The loss was about $6.3 billion, so roughly 6.3 times the size of the fund built for exactly this kind of day. The gap came from the company's own balance sheet. Good for customers this time, but the safety net was much smaller than the hole.

How big $6.3 billion is next to past exchange hacks

Binance hacked 2026 compared with the biggest crypto exchange hacks: Mt. Gox 0.47 billion dollars, Coincheck 0.53 billion, Bybit 1.5 billion and Binance 6.3 billion

Crypto has a long list of exchange failures, and a few names stand out. Mt. Gox lost about $0.47 billion in 2014. Coincheck lost about $0.53 billion in 2018. Bybit lost $1.5 billion in 2025, which was the record until last week. Binance's reported $6.3 billion is about 4.2 times the Bybit theft and about 13 times Mt. Gox.

Mt. Gox did not survive its hack. Binance, so far, has kept its doors open, because it is big enough to write a cheque most companies could not. It is also not the exchange's first time in the headlines: in November 2023, Binance and its founder Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to US federal charges in a $4 billion resolution.

As a business owner, I take one point from that history. Size can absorb a shock. Size also makes you a target. The bigger the vault, the more people try the lock.

What happened to gold that week

Here is the part that caught many people off guard. Bitcoin fell from 81,268 dollars on 28 October to 77,775 on 29 October, a drop of 4.3% in one day, and was still near 78,000 on 2 November. Then on Friday 30 October, gold futures on COMEX fell 3.3%, one of the biggest daily drops of the past six months. Stocks were falling at the same time. The old story says gold rises when everything else falls. That week it fell with everything else.

Gold had been sliding for weeks before the hack, and it is down roughly a quarter from its January 2026 record (a CryptoTicker weekly recap puts it at 27%). The news landed on a gold market that was already tired.

Was the hack the cause?

Be careful with the easy headline. Analysts writing in Analytics Insight tied the broad sell-off in Bitcoin, precious metals and stocks to worries about AI investment, sticky inflation and tighter liquidity. The hack arrived in an already nervous week. Nobody can honestly tell you what share of gold's drop came from Binance. What I can explain is the mechanism that makes gold fall in a week like this, because it will happen again, hack or no hack.

Why gold did not act as a safe haven

People sell what they can sell

When money gets tight, people do not sell what they want to sell. They sell what they can. If your coins are frozen on an exchange and you need cash, or you have a margin call on a stock position, you reach for the asset that is easy to sell and has done well. For many portfolios in 2026, that was gold, after its strong run into January. Gold can be sold at almost any hour, in large size. In a liquidity squeeze, that strength becomes a weakness: gold becomes the cash machine.

Margin calls create forced sellers

Leverage turns a fall into forced selling. One reader wrote to us earlier this year, in capitals: "I TOPUP MANY times since yesterday to avoid margin call". Not everyone can top up. When they cannot, the broker closes their positions for them, at whatever price is on the screen. Those sales push the price lower and trigger the next round of margin calls. That chain does not care whether an asset is "safe" over ten years, only who has to sell today.

Safe haven is a long-run idea, not a one-day promise

Gold earned its reputation over years and decades, through inflation and currency crises. I have written about that in why gold rises in times of fear, and about the less tidy reality in does gold go up when stocks go down. On a single day in a squeeze, gold trades like any other liquid asset. That is not a betrayal. It is what markets do when many people need cash at the same moment.

Gold the metal versus gold on an exchange

This is the part most coverage of the hack missed. Binance does not only list crypto coins. On 8 January 2026 it announced USDT-settled perpetual futures on gold and silver, as DL News reported. The gold contract was reported to offer up to 50x leverage. The exchange also lists a PAXG perpetual with up to 75x leverage, and a Tether Gold perpetual whose monthly volume reached a record $6.4 billion in March 2026, according to FXStreet.

A perpetual future is not gold. You do not own a bar or a coin. You hold a stablecoin-margined contract sitting on an exchange, so you carry two risks at once. There is market risk, the chance that gold moves against you. And there is exchange risk, the chance that the venue is hacked, pauses withdrawals or changes its rules. During the freeze, anyone holding a gold contract on Binance still had gold exposure but could not move their margin off the platform. A reader once told us they felt safe because money "can be deposited and withdrawn quickly". For a few days, only the first half of that was true.

What leverage does to a 2% day

The arithmetic is simple and worth doing once. The loss on your margin is the move against you multiplied by your leverage. A 2% move against you costs 10% of your margin at 5x, 20% at 10x, 40% at 20x and 100% at 50x. At 75x, a move of just 1.33% is enough to wipe the margin out. All of that is before fees and funding costs. Now put the 3.3% fall of 30 October next to those numbers. If the margin side is new to you, what a margin call is and how to avoid one walks through it, and allocated versus unallocated gold covers the question of what you actually own.

What a careful gold holder takes from this

Know who sits between you and your gold

Every way of holding gold has someone in the middle, except the metal in your own hand: a vault, a fund, a broker, an exchange. None is wrong in itself. For each, ask three questions: who holds it, can I take it out when I want, and what happens if they stop.

Where you hold matters as much as what you hold

For a long-term holder, a few frozen days is an inconvenience. For someone who needs that money to meet a margin call elsewhere, it can mean being forced out at the worst price. Spreading where you hold things is not about predicting the next hack. It is about making sure no single venue can lock up everything at once.

Size for 2% days, because they are normal now

Over the last six months, 126 trading days from May to November 2026, gold futures moved 2% or more in a single day on 20 days, about 16% of the time. They moved 1% or more on 55 days, about 44%. The largest one-day fall was 3.6% on 10 June and the largest rise was 3.7% on 5 August. So the 3.3% drop on 30 October was big, but not strange; I covered this pattern in how much gold moves in a day. If a 2% day turns your position into an emergency, the position is too big. Size it so a day like 30 October is an annoyance, not a crisis. The groundwork for that is in protecting your capital when gold gets volatile.

Keep a buffer outside the market

Forced selling mostly happens to people with no spare cash. A buffer held away from your trading account and away from any single exchange means a frozen withdrawal or a sharp red day does not force your hand.

Frequently asked questions

Was Binance really hacked in 2026?

Yes. Binance disclosed a security breach on 29 October 2026 and halted withdrawals early on 30 October, Asia time. The reported loss was about $6.3 billion, the largest crypto theft on record. The FBI attributed the attack to North Korea's TraderTraitor group.

Did Binance customers lose their money?

Binance said it would absorb the loss rather than pass it on, and that about 95% of the stolen assets were replenished by 1 November. Withdrawals for major coins and USDT and USDC resumed in phases that day. Some smaller tokens were still under review.

Why did gold fall when a crypto exchange was hacked?

Gold fell 3.3% on 30 October together with Bitcoin and stocks, in a week of tighter liquidity. In a squeeze, people sell what is easy to sell, and margin calls force sales. Gold is very liquid, so it often gets sold early.

Is gold on a crypto exchange the same as owning gold?

No. A gold perpetual future is a stablecoin-margined contract held on the exchange. You carry exchange risk on top of market risk, and if withdrawals pause, your margin is stuck too.

Should I move my gold because of this?

That is your decision, and nothing here is advice to buy, sell or move any asset. The week does show the value of knowing who holds your gold, whether you can take it out, and whether your position can survive a 2% day.
